Last week, we took time away to enjoy ourselves with family and to relax on the holiday weekend. This week, time has been scarce, but research has been abundant. My wife and I spent the past week back in New York City, walking the streets of Williamsburg and examining the exhibits between the many fantastic museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and the Brooklyn Museum. It felt great to be back in the place we call home, but our time back on the plane and checking in and out of our hotel put my entrepreneurial wheel into a state of deep thought. Let us take a second to think about how we plan our trips today. We go to Google, TripAdvisor, Expedia, or whatever our platforms of choice are and spend hours upon hours curating a unique itinerary of places to stay, things to do, and restaurants to eat at while scouring various reviews or subreddits for recommendations. Unfortunately, this way of planning travel is something that has not changed for nearly two decades! Keeping with the recent theme, I wanted to explore an area that has seen little change, which is ripe for disruption with the coming technology being produced with artificial intelligence — travel.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has already started transforming various industries; the travel industry is no exception. The use of AI in travel is poised to increase in the coming years and significantly impact the entire travel experience. From personalized recommendations to enhanced safety and security, AI is set to make travel more convenient, enjoyable, and sustainable.

Personalized Travel Planning

One of the key ways AI is poised to shape the future of travel is by providing personalized recommendations to travelers. Travel platforms could use machine learning algorithms to analyze data such as a traveler’s past behavior, preferences, and other data points to suggest personalized travel destinations, accommodations, and activities. This will help travelers to plan their trips better, making the entire experience more enjoyable. Expedia is one of the largest online travel agencies in the world, and they have been investing in AI technology to enhance the user experience and do just that. AI has the potential to enhance the safety and security of travelers significantly. This can help travelers stay safe and secure, even in unfamiliar and potentially dangerous places.

As more travel companies invest in AI technology, the industry will continue to transform, making travel more seamless, stress-free, and enjoyable.

The future of travel is exciting, and AI technology will play a significant role in shaping the industry’s future, but the unfortunate reality is everything mentioned above still brings us back to the same root problem. We still need to go to a different platform for all of our needs and hours of research still needs to be done to ensure we are picking the right hotel or the right restaurant. This means that currently the slog continues. One day soon however, we may be able to tell an application, such as ChatGPT, the city we are traveling to, such as New York City, and based on our interests, we can have an entire itinerary booked for us, including flights, hotels, restaurants, and more in a matter of minutes!
